School of Energy & Power Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University was developed on the basis of Department of Power Machinery Manufacture, which was founded in 1952 in Shanghai and later moved to Xi'an together with the main body of Jiaotong University in 1956. In 1975, Department of Machinery Manufacture and parts of Department of Engineering Physics were merged and re-constructed into two new departments: Department of Energy & Power Engineering and Department of Power Machinery Engineering. In April 1994, with the adjustment of Schools and Departments in Xi'an Jiaotong University, these two departments were merged and developed into the Energy & Power Engineering School. In July of 2004, the main body of the School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering joined into the School of Energy & Power Engineering and forms the present Energy & Power Engineering School. With long history, the school has more than ten specialists with high reputation and famous young scholars in the academic and engineering fields of energy and power aspects. The school has 179 teaching and researching faculty members, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 well-known scholars who have been granted as the National Outstanding Achievement Experts, 70 professors and 62 associate professors. 66.7% of teachers possess Ph.D. degree. Among young scholars, 3 persons are awarded as the Cheung Kong Scholars from the Ministry of Education of China, 3 persons are awarded as the Distinguishing Young Scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 person is selected into "Ten Million Talent Project" by the Ministry of Personnel and jointly by other 6 Ministries, 1 person is selected as ¡°New-Century Ten Million Talent Project¡± by the Ministry of Education, 15 persons are selected into the Cross-Century Excellent Talents or the New-Century Excellent Talents by the Ministry of Education, 4 persons receive the National Young Science and Technology Award, 5 persons become ¡°Hundred Excellent Ph.D. Dissertation Receiver¡±. 2 person has entered into the program for the excellent core teacher by the Ministry of Education, 3 persons¡¯ research work are supported by the "Excellent Young Teacher Project" and 12 persons by the "Core Teacher Project" by the Ministry of Education, Meanwhile, 6 persons are elected as the talents by Shannxi Provincial Government, 5 persons receive the Huo-Yingdong University Young Teacher Award and 4 persons entered the Young Talent Program of Xi'an Jiaotong University.
The school has many research institutes, including Boiler Research Institute, Power Plant Thermal Energy Research Institute, Power System Engineering Research Institute, Fluid Machinery Research Institute, Refrigeration and Cryogenic Research Institute, Compressor Research Institute, Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute, Impeller Machinery Research Institute, Turbomachinery Research Institute, Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Nuclear and Thermal Power Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics Research Institute. Three national research institutions are located in the school. They are the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center of Fluid Machinery & Compressor and State Key Laboratory of Fluid Machinery. The School is providing an excellent hardware and human environment for basic scientific research and technology improvement and transferring. A number of inventions and achievements on international or national level have been achieved, and more than 100 awards in state level and provincial level were received. Two of the research achievements are on the list of 100 national projects whose average economic benefit exceeds RMB 100 million. From 2001 the school has received three national science and technology awards. Now, more than 200 state and provincial projects are being carried out in school. Research fund of the school exceeds RMB 30 million each year.

1 Department of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering
The Department of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering consists of State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering, Institute of Boiler , and Institute of Thermal Power & Dynamic Control Engineering for Power Plant. There are 50 teachers and staff members, including 21 professors, 15 doctorial tutors, 1 member of Chinese Academy of Science, 1 member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 member of Special Engaged Professor of the Yangtse River Scholar, 1 member of National-level Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution, 3 members of New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education. The research and teaching topics are focused on the key scientific problems and high technology fields which are in great demands of the country, such as energy conversion methods and efficiencies in energy power equipments. There are three main disciplines, including thermo physics of multiphase flow, high-efficient and cleansing transformation of fossil energy and utilization in large-scale of renewable energy, energy saving and process control of thermal power system. The system with pressure up to 40 MPa is the only one experimental system in China and has also reached the advanced level of international. More than ten experimental systems have also been designed and setup, including hydrogen production from biomass gasification in supercritical water, rheological characteristic and heat mass transfer of large scale oil-gas-water three-phase flow slug flow, hot-state system of coal combustion, large-scale wet flue gas desulfurization system, air-water-sand three-phase sandstorm wind tunnel, multifunction system of thermodynamic system, dynamic emulation system of thermodynamic system, MSF desalination system of sea water, etc. Each of the three main disciplines has developed its own characteristics, won a number of national and provincial-level awards, and contributed a lot for the technology improvement and development of national economy.
2 Department of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering
Department of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering was founded in 1956, which is the first unit offering undergraduate program of refrigeration and cryogenics in China . It is also first approved to grant master's degree, doctoral degree and to offer post-doc program. It is the first one to offer the Changjiang Chair Professor position in the discipline of refrigeration and cryogenics engineering. The discipline was approved to be national key discipline in 2001.
There are 47 working faculty members in the department, including 13 professors and 12 associate professors. Faculty members also include one communication academician of Ukraine Academy of Automation Engineering, two Experts with Outstanding Contribution to the State, one Expert with Outstanding Contribution to Shaanxi Province , two New-Century Excellent Talents at the National Level, three Cross-Century Excellent Talents and two Changjiang Chair Professors awarded by the Ministry of Education of China .
There are two institutes in the department, i.e., the Institute of Compressor Technologies and the Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering. More than 70 professional books have been published by the staff of the department. Also, 15 National Awards and more than 60 Ministry Awards have been granted to the department. More than 50 projects or programs have been supported by the government and international cooperation projects are ongoing in several research fields.
3 Department of Fluid Machinery
Department of Fluid Machinery consists of Institute of Fluid Machinery and SER Turbomachinery Research and Engineering Center .
The Institute of Fluid Machinery was founded in 1956 and is the state key discipline and authorized to offer PhD. The State Specialty Laboratory of Fluid Machinery and the State Center for Fluid Machinery and Compressor are attached to the institute. The faculty includes 4 professors, 6 associate professors and 5 technicians. Their current researches focus on the fluid dynamics, numerical analysis of the turbo-machinery, wind engineering and wind-turbine, aero-acoustics and its control, aero-elasticity, bifurcation and chaos in the fluid-structure interaction £¬ rotor dynamics etc.
SER Turbomachinery Research and Engineering Center was established in 1992. Since its establishment, the center has been focusing on intensive study of turbomachinery internal flow both theoretically and experimentally, optimal design and CAD/CAM integration of centrifugal blower and compressor, and structural analysis and rotor dynamics, etc. There are 3 professors, 3 associate professors, and a team of some 40 PhD and Master students.
4 Department of Power Machinery Engineering
Department of Power Machinery Engineering is originated from the Department of Automotive Engineering and the Thermal Power Engineering. It includes Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Institute of Turbomachinery . Internal Combustion Engine Specialty was established in 1952, Master degree was granted in 1981 and doctoral degree in 1986. In 1995, the specialty was broadened and was named as the Department of Automotive Engineering. The predominant research areas focus on high-efficient low-emission alternative fuel engines, engine combustion theory and pollutant controlling. Turbomachinery specialty was also established in 1952, Master degree was granted in 1981 and doctoral degree in 1984. Institute of Turbomachinery is the earliest teaching and research division in the specialty of thermal turbines including steam and gas turbine in China , which was set up at Jiaotong University in 1952. Power Machinery Engineering Discipline is the key developed discipline in national ¡°211 Engineering¡± and ¡°985 Engineering¡±. In 2002, the discipline was promoted into the State Key Discipline. The graduates have become the pillars and leaders in enterprises, in academic circles and government in China .
5 Center of Thermal Fluid Science
Center of Thermal Fluid Science was founded in December 1997, on basis of Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Division and Fluid Mechanics Division. There are 22 faculty and staff members including 10 professors. Over 30 graduates per year are enrolled in the center. Its research field covers advanced numerical methods for fluid flow and heat transfer and their applications, enhanced heat transfer, cooling techniques for electronic devices, micro-scale fluid flow and heat transfer, thermo-physical properties of fluids, refrigeration cycle and system optimization, gas-liquid two-phase dynamics, aerodynamics £¬ non-Newtonian fluids and heat transfer, small scale refrigerator, heat pump, advanced thermal cycle, alterative fuel and refrigerant, molecular dynamic simulation, etc. More than ten national awards and prizes have been received, including the National Natural Science Award of China (second class), the National Science and Technology Progress Awards of China (second class), etc.
6 Department of Process Equipment and Control Engineering
Department of Process Equipment and Control Engineering prides itself on its identity as a national leader in bring up graduates and postgraduates specializing in the process equipment field of design, research and manufacturing. The main research field covers the reliability engineering and safety evaluation, chemical machinery with high efficiency, information technology and advanced measurement and control technology applied in process machinery.
7 Department of Nuclear Science and Technology
Department of Nuclear Science and Technology, inherited from engineering physics department which was established in 1958, includes a first-class discipline named Nuclear Science and Technology, and a major of nuclear engineering and nuclear technology for undergraduate students (granted as Famous Speciality of Shaanxi Province). The research area in the school covers nuclear science and engineering, nuclear technology and its application, and more than 20 research achievement awards were granted by nation or ministries. Numerous professionals of design, operation and management of nuclear engineering and technology graduated here.
8 Department of Chemical Engineering
Department of Chemical Engineering is ably staffed and has 3 professors, 4 associate professors and several lecturers. The department offers the Bachelor's Degree, master's degree and doctor's degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology. Currently over 10 research projects are conducted from various supporting program. The department seeks to enhance all aspects of collaboration between universities all over the world.
9 Department of Environmental Science and Engineering
Department of Environmental Science and Engineering is devoted to the development of high-level platform for the education, scientific research and technological innovation in the field of environmental science and engineering. It strives to solve the environmental problems to meet the challenges in the exploitation of Western China . The department has made great contribution to water and air pollution control, environmental chemistry £¬ environmental information and imitation as well as biological technology.
10 Teaching Experiments Center
Teaching Experiments Center (TEC) is an independent department main works on practice indication and Teaching experimental bases building. It directly belongs to School of Energy and Power Engineering. TEC consists of 3 fundamental labs and 6 professional labs. Over 170 test rigs are inside and value RMB29.3 million. The total area is about 2550 m2 . There are 10 faculty and staff members including 5 Senior Engineers, 4 Engineers and 1 Associate Engineer. And there are over 10 teachers working in it part time.
The teachers of TEC indicate over 50 subjects, about 200 Experiments included, which belong to 5 main specialties (Energy and Power Engineering and Automation, Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technique, process Equipment and Control Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technique, Environment Engineering). Every year, there are about 5500 students, over 200 classes, doing experiments 25000 times in TEC.
The students finish the experiments 40 times, when they study in School of Energy and Power Engineering. Synthesis experiment, validation experiment, demo experiment are Included. There are some creation experiments for applying.
The teachers of TEC also indicate experiments for other schools students, such as students of Material, Mechanical Automation, Aviation, etc.
